Thanks everyone - we went back to the 2nd choice candidate & she has accepted the job!
Unfortunately her start date is 2 weeks later than the original one was which is a slight issue for us but I am confident she will do well in the role.
Elsien, I'm sorry but I don't think we interviewed you! If we did & you have accepted our job, we've rearranged the cluttered office that you saw when you did the site tour & your new desk is cleared & waiting for you if you want to start today?

I'm candidate B (not in this case but my own).

Got in touch with my old boss, nothing. Week later I get a blaze of messages from him with the same circumstance as the thread, interview, contract, etc. I wasn't seen as second choice either as the role was technically filled!

Manager made the decision within an hour of the interview; I'm starting in August. Better pay, better commute, better prospects...but sad to be leaving the people I know behind! Regardless, got to look at the long term when you're in your late 20's and can still forge a career :)

If I was b I'd take it- it would be worse to see it readvertised & to think I wasn't good enough

This thread actually highlights how important it is to still make a good impression if the employer actually calls to say that the job has gone to someone else. I know quite a number of people who were turned down and later were called again with an offer (for the same job or another).

It happened once when I was interviewing. Called candidate B to say that hadn't had the job. It was a close decision between the two and I said so. The response was 'yeah yeah, of course I was close, why don't you just say it that I wasn't good enough and that's why I didn't get the job'. I understood they were disappointed but that attitude didn't help them when candidate A decided not to take the job and I decided to go straight to candidate C, who was only C because even though they had given a great interview, they didn't have a couple of essential requirements (interviewed anyway because most applicants didn't, only candidate A and B did). As it was, candidate C had been very pleasant on the phone, said that they understood they hadn't got the job but had been pleased to make it to interview. I offered him the job and as my gut feelings had indicated, they were so quick to learn what was required for the job they were able to take the task with no help after only a few weeks. 7 years later, they have already been promoted twice.

It wouldn't bother me coming 2nd ... if being 2nd is good enough then it's better to be offered it than to sit and see it readvertised without a word.

One of my friends travelled a long way for an interview by train at quite short notice so had costs of about £80. She asked HR if they paid expenses, but they said only if successful. So my friend threw her tickets away when she was told she was unsuccessful. 5 weeks later she got a call saying the original person had withdrawn and offered her the post which she accepted. She used to complain that she was annoyed she'd thrown her tickets away so couldn't claim the expenses and vowed to keep others in the future for an indefinite period of time!!
