Yes ! - but may depend what you put in the unsuccessful letter, was B told they were 2nd choice?

Although I am currently in a position where I was re-approached once the position filled and come up again due to a dismissal, I wasn't told this and rather foolishly presumed job previously just hadn't been filled.. until the first day so it could be worse! - think now I preferred not hearing
but I suppose it saved a company money and time in the end

I joked with an interviewer today how I was the never say never lady when they promised to let me know outcome! :o

A similar thing happened to me 5 years ago... I interviewed for a brilliant job, got told it was down to me and another candidate but the job was given to the other person.

A year later I got a phone call off the interviewer asking if I was still looking for work and if so would I be interested in another position that had come up. It was for the same role as the original vacancy. As I had been temping for that year I jumped at the chance and have now spent the last 4 years doing a job I love working alongside the other 'winning' candidate.

Turned out that although they thought I interviewed well, the other candidate had more experience. All turned out well though! Would definitely recommend anyone in my position to do the same... don't cut off your nose to spite your face etc etc

    Yes, definitely.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

I think we've got a 3rd choice person atm, and they're great! Yes, I'd offer it - if there's anything you can use to make the 'you weren't our first choice and you know it' a bit softer then that's useful.

For example, with this '3rd choice' person, we were able to say that they'd got experience of one part of the JD, but very little of another major part. We'd found a way to cover the other major part, so would they like a job? We didn't say how desperate we were ...

There will nearly always be better people for the job than you.

Some won't apply, some won't accept, that's life.

One thing to consider is the remuneration package correct as someone has turned it down based on the money.

Sometimes people get the job because they have more experience or better qualifications, as in my case:(, however I would accept a second choice offer even if it was not straight away.

If someone really wants the job like me :j then they will take it even if it is just for experience as they might like it and stay for a long time.

Don't forget the person who shines at the interview might not be the best person for the job.

    Definately!
It happened to me too with the job i'm in now.
Got a call a few days after the interview to say i hadn't got it but I was 2nd choice, the other person had more experience.
i was only working a cleaning job of 6 hours at the time and looking for more hours. I had also recently took a computer course and word processing in lieu to changing the type of work I could do.
funnily enough I got to the end of that week being really fed up at home now my son was older thinking I would never get another chance like that. They rang that day to offer it to me. I later found out the other candidate had been unable to start work there due to a change in circumstances.
Six years later i'm still here and I really enjoy it.
    Back on the trains again!

That's why I always contact the unsuccessful people after the successful candidate has accepted the conditional offer :)

But yes, I would still accept the offer if I hadn't found anything else. Indeed, we've even had people joining months after they first interviewed and were turned down - either because the position became available again or another suitable position had come up.

I once got a call from a company I interviewed for, asking me if I was interested in a particular position that had come up. It would have meant reporting to the role I originally interviewed for. I would have gone for it had the role been of interest (I can understand why I didn't get it - just had no chance over the other candidate who had years more of experience in the the industry the business was in).

We had this happen with a job where I worked years ago. The 2nd choice candidate knew the 1st choice candidate as they both worked for the same other company and both knew they'd been interviewed. The 2nd choice was very happy to get the chance.

My OH was a 2nd choice candidate and was offered a position a few weeks after being turned down for it when the successful candidate walked out of the job. It was only a contract position supposed to cover for a few weeks while the appointed a permanent person (he didn't want a permanent position). He ended up doing that contract then another and being there over 2 years.
