Strange ''windows 7 is not genuine' message

My elderly mother has just rung me to say that after switching on her laptop (three years old and bought from new) she has a message on it saying 'This copy of Windows 7 build 7601 is not genuine' and she can't get rid of it.

I've tried searching for what this is and get various answers from 'it's not genuine' to 'something is wrong'.

Can anyone tell me what is going on with this and can I do anything via remote access?

Thanks

Hi this happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I just ignored it and when I turned the computer on the next day it had gone. I just assumed it was some sort of scam similar to when you get a pop up saying your computer is infected.

To add I also did a fresh set of virus scans ( AVG and malawarebytes) before I turned the computer off, they both came up with no problems found.
  • Seems to be a common problem.
Try Googling This copy of Windows 7 build 7601 is not genuine
