Controlling contagion

Going off the other chickenpox thread....
My LO has it bad :( My other child had it a few weeks ago and got off quite lightly. Other child is at pre-school today.
The problem is....how do I pick other child up? I have nobody to watch LO at home so have to take them with me. I raised the issue with pre-school the other day and they said it would be fine to bring LO into nursery just to collect older child as most of the pre-school kids had already had chickenpox now.
But then I realised....what about the kids in the school grounds (that I have to walk through) who haven't had it? What about adults that haven't had it? What about ladies that could be pregnant?

So.... how do I collect older child from pre-school without infecting everybody with LO's chickenpox? I don't think LO would be too happy about being left in the car and even if I could park outside school I wouldn't be able to see the car when I walk round the back to the pre-school class.

Any ideas please?

  • Calm down, your panicking!

Put the little one in a buggy, try to keep out of people's way when you pick up your other child. Its unlikely you'll pass it on just from your presence. People would need to have some contact with your child.

Also a lot of kids could be carrying it without even knowing (before the spots erupt), they could be unknowingly infecting people who are pregnant etc. But life goes on, you can't live on what if's and all you can do is take "reasonable precautions".

Relax, stay on the side, warn others to stay away, (unles they want the pox) and pick up your child. As long as your pox child is in a buggy and by your side, it'll be fine.
  • Meant to say, mine had chicken pox back to back, so whilst one had it the other was at school and vice versa. We just made sure we got to school bang on the bell or slightly after to minimise contact. And both my kids had it very very badly, so they looked horrendous for the first week.

I had this problem a couple of years ago, complicated by nursery staff and other mums being pregnant. Our nursery were very keen to control infection too, so were happy for me to call on my mobile from the gate, and they sent a member of staff out to collect and deliver the recovered child from me whilst I waited with the spotty sibling :).

    Sounds like an excellent idea!

    I agree.

It would have saved me a stay in hospital on oxygen when I was expecting my second child, had whoever owned the child that sat next to me in the school playground (and never mentioned it) thought to do the same.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Thank you. I was over-reacting but that's because I felt unprepared. One minute i was thinking "great my child can still go to pre-school" and the next I started thinking about the 'what-ifs' of taking a contagious LO out and about.
The pre-school did bring my child to the gate and I kept LO in a pram away from anybody :-)

Thank you for being so thoughtful about others. :A
Hope your LO makes a speedy recovery.

It is not always obvious if someone is pregnant, immunosuppressed or in poor health, but they can suffer disproportionately when exposed to the likes of chicken pox.
