Canceling Direct Debit with NPower

I recently changed energy companies from the dreaded NPower to Extra Energy. The Extra Energy account is now set up and operational.

There will be a small outstanding bill from Npower for a one month supply which I have not yet received. Would it now be safe to cancel the NPower direct debit through my bank at this stage? I don't want to have the incorrect amount of money removed from my account many months ahead like so many other NPower users are now complaing about.

Cancel it immediately and send them a cheque for the balance, quoting the final meter reading. You can't take any chances with this bunch of buffoons.

I am not sure what the exact balance is? otherwise I would send NPower a cheque to clear off the account.

If I stopped my direct debit, would NPower notify me of the outstanding balance?

To be honest, it's difficult to know what to do for the best with NPower. If you ring them up you'll be on hold for up to an hour, and then they'll disregard your instructions. If you write to them there's every chance they just won't action your request at all.

On balance, and if you can spare the time, I'd ring them (it's Freephone), tell them the DD is closed, give them the closing meter reading and tell them you'll send a cheque when they send you a final bill.

So much for your new supplier sorting things out!

Finally, be vary wary of NPower. They report your account to the CRAs and there's every chance they'll screw you over in this respect.
