I'm still working for them, alongside a few other regular clients, currently bringing in approx £450 a month from them.

This sounds right up my street. Although I need to get Microsoft
Office on my laptop and I have no idea how fast I can type?! I know I'm fairly quick though. Will have to see if there's an online test I can do?

The self employed part scares me a bit though!

May I ask how many actual hours of work that equals? As in, how many hours you spend typing, and not the hours of audio provided.

I can type at 105wpm and an hour of clear audio will take me about 2.5 to 3 hours to type. Depending on what type of transcript they're wanting me to do and how good the recording is (both recording quality and whether or not people talk all over each other), my actual hourly rate (as opposed to audio hours) works out between £8.50 and £11.50 an hour.

This looks amazing. I got 86wpm at 10FastFingers and I do a lot of minute taking and similar in my day job, and any extra money is welcome.

For the 'minimum two shifts', how does that work? Can you say I'm available Saturday and Sunday and that's two shifts? Or would it be that Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon are each a shift? (If the work takes 2-4 hours for each piece of work)

There are lots of companies out there do this, some even pay more for the right people


Most transcribers would take around 4 (possibly up to 6) hours to transcribe an hour of straightforward audio, and if you're not experienced it can be considerably more to start with. It's not something everyone can do, transcription is a skill.


You've heard about Chinese whispers... four candles or fork handles? Imagine it's not a funny TV script but a real life interview between two people, they may have accents, they may not speak clearly, to say nothing of how clear the recording is.


Sadly it's not just about how fast you can type. You need good listening skills, and a lot of common sense - plus good grammar and command of the English language.


If you can do it, the rewards are definitely worth it but, in my experience, around 98% of people who apply can't. That said, it certainly is a good, flexible way of making a living which fits around other employment, kids, etc.

I think 98% is a tad extreme.
