Conservatory / Planning permission questions

I want to add a conservatory to the side of my house, it wont meet the requirements to be a permitted development so I'll need planning permission.
Whats the best way to go about getting plans drawn up? Should I expect conservatory companies to provide something sufficent when giving me a quote, for free, or would I need to pay someone?
How detailed do they need to be? Having never seen them before I've no idea.
I've got an idea of what I want, but it doesnt fit with the 'off the peg' conservatories. Is this design realistic?
Any idea what I should expect to pay for the conservatory with decent spec glass, if I get the building work done myself?
It seems like dwarf walls are usually 600mm, is there any reason I cant have a 1200mm wall?
Do I need to have an external door if I dont want one, for fire regs or something?
Any other thoughts or advice much appreciated.

I'd either draw the plans myself, insist that the conservatory company provides you with scaled plans (they may charge), or, failing that, get an architectural technician to do some simple plans - cheaper than an architect but just as good for this kind of thing.
For a planning application, you'll need a set of fully scaled plans - a location plan (1:1250), a site plan (1:500 or 1:200), and a set of elevational drawings and a floorplan (1:100 or 1:50).0 -

Thanks for the reply. What sort of cost would this incur with a technician?
Can I download the location plan and site plan from somewhere? Ordenance survey?0 -
To be honest, I have no idea what a technician would charge, but if you Google them, there is a central body which represents architectural technicians - should be easy to find and I think there should be some kind of search facility on there to find ones local to you. Could always get some quotes from some of them?
Yes, you can buy a location plan (and a site plan, if you want to draw on the conservatory yourself), online - if you submit your application online (via the Planning Portal website - it goes straight to your Council if you do that), then you can buy location plans on there. Otherwise, Google 'planning maps' or something similar and you'll see lots of companies selling such plans. Just make sure it's 1:1250 scale for the location plan (or 1:2500 would do, if you have a massive plot!)0 -
Thanks again for the reply.
I had a conservatory place come out today and they will produce CAD plans, but would need someone else to produce the other plans. Apparently the person that they usually use charges £250.
I have emailed a couple from here, to see if that is a typical fee:
