Pet hair and washing machine.

We really need some help with this, so what ever ideas you have or do no matter how small or silly it may seem please jump in.

Ok, so we are at the monent looking after my sons granddads dog who is 17. He is in a tempory care home whilst his house is being literally re built - it was about to fall down as he is 91 years old always lived in the house and never done anything to it to maintain it.#

The dog is a lab cross but looks like a golden lab, shes very sweet natured but has become incontinent so at night she has to sleep in the kitchen on a bed which we change everyday so it can just be mopped up. The vet has been to see her a couple of times as she comes to see our dog on a regular basis and has said shes just old but shes fine, there is no problem with her heart or anything.

During the day we leave the door open for her and she goes outside to pee its just whilst shes asleep that shes does it where she lays.

The problem is the washing machine is getting full of dog hairs and no matter how many times we run it on empty we can't seem to get rid of them and my DIL is fed up as all her clothes are coming out full of dog hairs.

So does anyone have any ideas as to what we can do to sort this problem out?

We have tried dish washer tablets.

TIA :o
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

What about putting the dog bed into a pillowcase or old duvet cover and then in the washing machine. This would wash the wee out but , hopefully, contain the hairs which would then disperse while bed was on washing line or in tumble dryer .

This is just a thought have never tried it. Wiping the machine out with a damp cloth after use removes some dog hair but I suspect some lingers behind the drum and then reappears during the next wash cycle.

Brushing the dog may help reduce the amount of hair shed too.

We use washbags. One for the dogs' stuff, to keep hair enclosed, and one for our stuff, to keep hair out! We have two heavy shedding breeds, hence the prolific hair everywhere.

It's 'numnah' bags we use, like this

Making sure the filter is cleaned regularly may help more of the hairs disperse down into it, if it's full there may be nowhere else for the hair to go.

I regularly wash horse numnahs, fly rugs etc in my washing machine. After removing items I leave the door open for a few hours and then use the pipe on the vacuum cleaner to vacuum out the dry hair. Much better than wiping with a cloth to remove the hair.

Hand wash the dog bed cover in the sink or bath?

A friend with an incontinent elderly dog uses puppy pads in her bed at night, the pad soaks up all the wee so none gets on the bed itself. They just throw the pad out in the morning and give the dog a wipe down.

It would help firstly by not needing washing as often and a lot of fur would be thrown out with the pad so less going in the machine.

Daily grooming should help with the amount of loose fur, it won't stop it altogether but will reduce it.

Washbags here too, got off amazon. Got the extra large and can fit whole scruffy bed in or vet bed and towels, don't know how I managed without

We have to wash the towels we line our cat's bed with from time to time. After washing the cats towels I always put our own towels through next as we're not bothered if these get a bit hairy. This seems to be enough to catch anything so that clothing behind doesn't come out hairy.

  • It won't help clearing the washing machine out, but I've found those sticky lint rollers really useful for getting rid of cat hairs on my clothes that remain after a wash.
