Paying for work which we are not happy with.

Hi all,

Just a quick one and looking for some ideas...

A couple of weeks ago we had new fascias and guttering put on the back of our house by a local small business. The chimney was also fixed with some new lead alternative flashing. Price, £600.

We did not pay as they had to come back and finish one or 2 bits (end pieces on the fascia board) and this was fine by him.

Today there has been lots of rain and almost every joint in the guttering is leaking.

The guy said he would send someone over today to fix, thinking the Mrs was at work. However, she was home early. Leaks are still there and no one has been.

The boss is coming at 7 tonight to pick up the cash for the job. Saying he needs the money tonight because he is going on holiday.

Now, what would anyone suggest is fair to pay him? I have suggested to the Mrs to pay him £200 for the materials. I know it cost £200 because I priced it up and he said that is about what it will cost him. I have said to tell him we will pay the rest when we are happy with the work.

Does this sound reasonable? What would anyone else do it this situation? I am working away so unfortunately cant be there to help her out.

Thanks very much everyone.

Luke

Personally I wouldn't be paying anything until the work is done properly, I'd ring him and tell him so.
  • Thanks Monty. He has done a good job on the chimney so maybe I am getting ahead of myself and he might fix it just fine... but he wont be fixing it tonight, so he wont be getting paid tonight which seems fair enough to me. It just seems to be leaking so badly I cant imagine anyone not testing it first with a bucket or 2 of water.

Half now half on completion sounds about fair since he has actually done the chimney.
