Sorry to be blunt, but you really should have checked before spending any money sent direct to you. In addition, if the account remained open you would still have been getting monthly statements showing the amount outstanding.
It appears your card has now defaulted and the debt has been passed to a collection agency.
If you've spent the money, you cannot now complain because you failed to check that the debt was satisfied.

If you cannot afford to repay your debt, you need to make an appointment with a debt counsellor at CAB etc.
