Faulty stereo amp

I bought a Pioneer amp out of Richer sounds in April 2013.
Yesterday I smelt smoke and consequently sparks coming out of the amp.
Took plug out for a while then tried again and the same, so of course its now disconnected.
I phoned up RS and the gentlemen found my purchase details thankfully and said take it into the store for an evaluation FoC.
So....if this is beyond repair what rights do I have? If its repairable who picks up the cost?
I've read the Soales of goods act gives me 6 years in total? or is an incorrect assumption?

You are right, the Sale of Goods Act gives you six years, but there is more to it than that.I bought a Pioneer amp out of Richer sounds in April 2013.

It actually gives you up to six years to seek a remedy from the seller if the goods are inherently faulty.
Have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights guide for more detail, and of course ask further questions if you wish.0 -
They have offered to review what is wrong with it. I guess it would be a proving game by them to prove if anything was not manufacture fault?
The amp was 160 odd quid, I am really not best pleased tbh.0 -

No, after 6 months it is for you to prove is was an inherent fault. It sounds like they are trying to help though.0 -
Richer Sounds are one of the better retailers, but of course if they discover it is not due to a manufacturing fault then I imagine they may not offer anything. They have offered to review what is wrong with it. It is worth remembering that legally it is for you to prove to them that the goods were faulty at the time of sale.
As you will have read, in the case of an inherent fault a remedy could be a repair, replacement or refund, and any refund could be reduced to take account of the use you have had. You can express a preference but you cannot force a retailer to provide a disproportionate remedy.
But wait and see what they offer.0 -
The fault could also be caused by someone pullign the cable, or fluids that have got inside, etc - best let them take a look - RS are generally excellent in their customer service0
