Problems with switching energy supplier
Hello,
We've been renting a flat for the last 9 months, about 1 month into the tenancy we decided to switch our utility supplier from Scottish Gas to Eon.
We contacted both companies providing meter readings for both gas and electricity and they confirmed that they would work out the details of the switch between themselves.
However, the final electricity bill we received from Scottish Gas was an estimate (approximately four times as much as it should have been) so we phoned them and they explained that this was the reading that Eon had provided them with.
We phoned Eon and they denied it saying they agreed on the meter reading that we had given them initially.
Back on the phone to Scottish Gas they agreed to go with the original reading and that they would send out a new, accurate, bill.
This was in February and we still have no bill, however, every time we phone Scottish Gas they say its sorted and the bill is on the way.
Furthermore, for reasons that Eon are unaware of and Scottish Gas are refusing to tell us, the transfer for both gas and electricity has not gone through. As such, while we're being billed for electricity to Eon, its all going into credit and the gas direct debit was stopped after one month, which also went into credit.
We've received phone calls from debt collectors on behalf of Scottish Gas regarding the estimated bill but when we explained to them what was happening they left us alone.
Interestingly, we've been in contact with both parties regarding the gas supply, both Eon and Scottish Gas claim not to be supplying us with gas and after phoning a number given to us by our letting agency for a company that has information on all gas supply's to the UK, they didn't know either.
We're moving flat in a week and would like to get this sorted but have no idea what to do. We owe someone money for the last 5 months of gas but nobody seems to want it and we're worried that our flat deposit will be affected by the over-estimated final gas bill from February.
Apologies for the masses of text but I hope someone will be able to give us some help.
Regards,
Andrew

Hiya Andrew,
Let me see if I can help you a bit
So, we supply the electricity, but you've not a first bill from us, or a final bill from your previous supplier?
Do you manage your account online? It may be a good idea to register you can then enter your reads and produce a real time bill or balance and make sure you're on the correct tariff etc.
Now the gas, I read it as neither of us are saying we supply? I think you've rang Xoserve to find out the current supplier, but they didn't have it on record, does that sound right? It may be that you have an IGT (Independent gas transporter) so basically not national grid.
It may be that your old supplier can see who requested to take the supply from them for the gas, if not they should have an IGT number to get the information.
If you need any more help from my side, please just let me know.

Thanks for the quick reply,
It seems like neither company is supplying us with either utility. We're paying Eon by a standing charge every month but the gas charge stopped after one month and all the payments are going into credit because Eon aren't supplying anything.
It seems like Scottish Gas have ended their supply but at the same time refused the transfer, possibly because we didn't pay the estimated final bill for the electricity.
I will set up online accounts for both companies tonight and see if it sheds anymore light on what we owe anyone but does it sound like I just need to get Scottish Gas to send me the correct bill and then pay that for this all to be sorted?
Also, when we hopefully get the final bill, will the supplies from the requested changeover date in February be owed to Eon or Scottish Gas do you think?
Thanks again

Oh I see!
I got that bit wrong then, although you're paying us, we're not supplying anything.
We can check the electricity supplier on a national database system that all suppliers can use, so this shouldn't be a problem to find out at all.
It's the gas that sounds a bit more complicated.
Also, if we've told you we don't supply either, why did we not cancel the Direct Debit etc? Or do you mean Standing Order? This is under the customers control not the supplier.
Who ever supplies you will be who you need to pay. It maybe that no change over happened in Feb, so you can just close the account when you move and pay that final bill.
Would you like me to take a look in to the account for you here?
If so, you can email your account number, if you have one, full name and address and a phone number if possible and I'll do some investigating for you.
It's forums@eonenergy.com

Thanks very much for your help
