They can if they want but would be pretty pointless.

Diesels with DPF still have some soot on the tail pipes and soot on the tailpipes isn't part of the MOT guidance / test when i last checked.

I just wondered because my car deposits no soot whatsoever on the tailpipes. Never has. They are shiny silver all the way back up the pipes into the silencers.

It was MOT'd last week and the smoke test showed "No detectable emissions" from both tailpipes.

Once a fortnight, drive to work keeping in low gear and high revs (above 2000rpm) all the way. That should help the dpf and won't affect your average mpg as much as you might imagine.

I imagine if the OP were going to have problems, it would already have happened bearing in mind this thread is almost a year old now...

OP maybe better off part exchanging for a petrol. His driving requirements doesn't suit a diesel. In winter months his car would have barely just warmed up by the time he arrives at work. Don't see where his benefitting with a diesel car, they take longer to warm up than petrol engines and around the same MPG as petrol's when warming up. No win for the OP

Hmmm... The wife's Golf bluemotion warms up quicker than my 3cyl 1.2l VW Fox...

When we bought our diesel Golf the dealer checks for suitability. In a nutshell 15 miles on the motorway each way with lot's of long country drives is fine. Indeed never had an issue with DPFs ever in years...

Mine needs to satisfy certain criteria for a DPF regen to begin.
At last 1/4 tank of fuel
Engine Coolant Temp at least 75 degrees
    Limited number of ECU errors

The thermostats tradidtionally fail at about 60k miles or so when they stick open.
Full coolant flow limits the coolant temp to low 70's so the car will never satisfy the criteria to begin.
No amount of Italian tuning will help (aside from passive regens).

It's important to understand WHY the DPF is not regenerating. Replacing the DPF just addresses a fault, not the cause.
  • Hi, I bought a diesel for city use, I was totally unaware of the DPF issue and not one of the salespersons who were aware of my driving use advised me against the purchase. The result 18 months later the engine completely collapsed. Its now a heap of junk and I am well out of pocket. There should be a law against this kind of mis selling.

I doubt the average car salesman knows much about the workings of a modern diesel. The diesels of the 90's early 2000's were really good but the later ones are getting more complicated with dpf egr, failures etc.

To keep the dpf regenerated you need a solid 20 minute run staying above 2000 rpm on a regular basis. I typically leave mine in 4th on the motorway once a week when it's quiet.

    What car is it?
    What's the mileage?
    What's the typical use?
