Mulch or not to mulch? That is the question?

As above really, are mulching lawnmowers such as the Hayter Hayterette or the Makita PLM5121 any good or do mulching mowers still have to be raked afterwards to collect excess grass???

What, another shiny new thread about your prospective lawnmower purchase? That's six now, innit? :D More than for your nice new shiny house!

Anyway, personally I've never found a good mulching lawnmower. I'm sure they do exist, at the upper end of the price range, but I've not come across a satisfied customer myself. They do have to work harder, cost more to service as well as buy, and may have a less long life.

Also, having seen photos of that lawn of yours, it's shady and seems fairly thatchy, possibly poorly draining. Not ideal for mulching, better off collected (and regularly raked/aerated). It's not particularly big, so a good hand-rake should suffice.
  • Thanks for the pointers, I ask questions because I look for advice when I purchasing something I know nothing about, not to show off a shiny new house ;-)

Guess mulching is no good for me so will continue the research on a normal petrol model.👍

    I don't think a Hayterette's a mulching mower, unless they've radically altered the design. Mine isn't.

It's a mower specifically built to tackle rough grass, small paddocks, orchards and stuff like that. Mine happily chews through 8" grass, but I wouldn't use it on the lawn!
