Car insurance, unemployment and temping?

I am currently a gentleman suffering a surfeit of leisure time. I really need to get a car asap for personal reasons and am trying to find my way through the insurance nightmare.
I am not claiming benefits but of course not working means the cost is much higher straight away.
I am also considering doing some temp work through an agency and this is where I am getting confused. If I sign on with an agency and get a few days work in a factory and then a week of nothing and then a few days in an office and then back to nothing do I have to inform the insurance company of every change?
If so this could be very expensive. On the comparison site I was using I couldn't find a 'temping' or similar option.
As temping, zero hour contracts and insecure work is increasingly common there must be many people facing the same issue. What is the best way of dealing with it and are there any companies that offer a better deal for temping?
thanks
