Ford Focus error code P2110
55 plate 2.0 petrol Focus has recently developed a fault where on starting it will rev to 4000 rpm for a short while without touching the accelerator.
When the engine is driven from a cold start it soon goes into limp mode with the Engine systems fault message showing and using an OBD2 scanner I get an error code P2110 Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Limited RPM.
It runs rough ( limp mode ) and the engine management light will come on after a few minutes with another code, P0325 Knock sensor circuit 1 bank 1.
If I drive for a bit in limp mode and let it warm up then turn off and back on again it revs high again but then settles down after a few seconds, I can reset the error codes and will drive fine for the rest of the drive.
Anyone have any ideas where to start looking on this ?

You need a proper diagnostic. The codes only point to where to start fault finding.
Do you have a throttle cable or is the throttle electronic?
Cold start valve? When was it serviced last? Plugs and leads etc?
Coil pack faulty?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
You really need it properly checked over, but it does sound like the throttle position sensor needs changed. It will be defaulting to its factory set range, but even that isn't foolproof, so sometimes the idle will drop too low and the knock sensor will be activated.
Not a big job, but you do need it properly diagnosed to exclude anything else.0 -

Electronic throttle , due a service but is done regular , plugs were done around 6000 miles ago and supposed to be long life (40,000 mile ? ) plugs but will pull them out and check them anyway , no plug leads or coil pack as such on this as it has individual coils on top of each plug with a couple of wires running to each coil....... it does sound like the throttle position sensor needs changed........
Typical , it looks like I've got a slightly different type of throttle body to the other engines and can't seem to find just a throttle position sensor online ( only the complete body with sensor ) but theres loads of different looking ones for other Focus engines , quite cheap too , it would be worth trying one of those if I could find one at a similar price.
I've noticed when it's running rough when cold there's a noise like air wooshing somewhere around the intake maniold area , stops as soon as the engine is warm and turned off/on.
I know you can expect some air flow noise around the manifold area but this seems louder than it should be , could the manifold swirl valves be sticking or maybe a split hose or gasket that's expanding and sealing when warm ?
I'll have a look tomorrow to see if I can wiggle the swirl valve actuator on the end of the intake and try a few smoke pellets underneath the engine to see if it's sucking in the smoke anywhere , worth a try ?0 -
Not had a chance to try anything yet but I've been thinking about the full diagnostics comments.
I remember a while back I had an MOT emissions fail on a car , took it to an Auto Electician for diagnostics ( few miles away along a dual carriageway ) he gave it a good looking over but couldn't find anything wrong. It cost me £40 to find out it ran fine when hot.
Would this be a similar situation, as the car runs fine after a minute or so of running would any problem show up on a diagnostic check or just the fault code that's already stored ?
Best idea would be to leave it there so they can cold start it but that's not possible at the moment.0 -
If its an intermittent fault then it needs to be present when they test it. If it only happens during the 1st minute of a cold start then they need the vehicle when its cold.
The codes dont always give an answer. They are just a place to start looking properly.
Too many garages will read the code and change the part mentioned without a thought as to what may cause that part to give a fault code or go out of range.
Voltage issues can cause all sorts of issues on a modern car. Sensors get a higher or lower voltage and may give incorrect data themselves.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Good news , it's just a split in the crankcase breather hose , bad news is it's a pain in the **** to get at as it's behind the intake manifold.
[STRIKE]Fraud[/STRIKE] erm Ford want £29.95 * for what looks like around 200mm of 25mm thick hose , stuff that , I'll temporary cover the split for now as I need the car next week but the week after I'll be able to go without it for a few days while I take it apart , find out the hose dimensions and get a replacement hose sorted.
* How can they justify asking that for a short piece of hose when you can buy a small sized tyre for the same price comparing the amounts spent on research , design and manufacture of a hose and tyre ?0 -
