Best place to buy a fake banknote detector pen?

Hi there,

Partner will be selling a car in the next few days and just wondering what is the best cheapest place to buy a fake banknote detector pen?

And just as a matter of interest if selling yourself would you insist in cash or other best method to get paid?

Thanks

    Try your local poundshop.

If I was selling a fake banknote detector pen, I would expect to receive cash. ;)

You can ask them to transfer the money into your bank account via their mobile phone/mobile banking.
You can then check yours to see if it went in. That's how I do it and it's almost instant.
If you do it any way other than cash, don't let them have the car until you have the money in the bank.

You can buy them from stationery shops like Ryman, WH Smith or Staples.

You might try Maplins, they seem to sell fairly random stuff.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...
  • Hi,

OP, don't buy a 'fake' banknote detector pen, it wont detect fakes, buy a genuine one.

That's why the demise of the hyphen is so disastrous. There is a considerable difference between
    • fake-banknote detector pen, and
    • fake banknote-detector pen, to say nothing of
    • fake-banknote-detector pen
as some people have already pointed out!

eBay.... but again be wary of fakes ;p

Also there is a lot to be said as far as uk currency is concerned for simply making a very close inspection of the note's security features (ie ribbon, hologram, feel of the paper, watermark -carefully noting the quality of each).

Also make sure you are being paid in notes you are familiar with, possibly negotiate with the buyer ie I need you to pay in notes of £20 denomination or lower *or* if you will be paid in an unfamiliar one (eg £50 or €500 notes) ->go get yourself one genuine one from the bank so you can directly compare security features and quality (allowing for circulation wear) when you do get paid. Also note any recent design changes (eg has the note been re-issued recently therefore be familiar with the 'old' and 'new' issues, or again make sure the buyer knows if you are paying in denomination x notes they need to be the current issue, *they* need to go to the bank and change them in advance if it's not what they have)

Or just have them come with you to the bank and pay their cash into your account with you leaving the bank to worry about the authenticity of the notes :)

-detector pens are/were more widely used in the us where their high value USD bills had fewer security features

I wonder whether these black light devices actually work well in the detection of fake money, as reviews often seem to complain that they are useless for detecting pet urine (Another purpose for which they are sold).

Don't rely on pens or other gadgets to detect the notes.
Look at the Bank of England's leaflet on how to check banknotes.

This is useful information for everyone who handles banknotes. I.e. Everyone.
