This exact same thing happened to my daughter when her car was parked outside.

Of cause your daughter now has to declare this for the next 3-5 years and she may find that insurers load her premium due to the incident. Some allow you off one non-fault incident, others load from the very first.

For a £1k repair I doubt the economics would stack up to pay for it privately to be able to get away not declaring it but a lot will depend on what the base premium is.
  • There could be more to it than just increased premiums for the neighbour's kid. The parents could be "fronting" the insurance cover for him and they don't want any insurers or agents sniffing around.

It would seem something like this afoot doesn't it. I can't see why else they would be happy about paying that much money.

Claim directly of the TPI, no one will be sniffing around. Inform your insurers at renewal that your parked and unattended vehicle was hit and the TPI dealt with it.

Fronting wouldnt impact the liability just their ability to claim off of their own insurance. A settled incident being reported for info early isnt going to trigger any investigations
  • Yeah but nervous parents don't know the above do they.

I would argue that more nervous parents dont know that fronting is an issue than anything
  • The correct thing to do is for the kid to put in a claim on the OP's wife's insurance, and then when renewal time comes up do some dummy quotes and find out how much his insurance went up due to it. He can then contact the OP's wife's insurance again and add that difference to the cost of the claim.

If the OP is feeling nice he could offer to just pay the difference without involving insurance, although for a young driver it could potentially be a large amount.
