Bad website design from MrSite - where do I stand?

Hi :hello:

For the past year I have been using a website for my small (non-registered) charity which I designed using MrSite.

Recently I decided to pay for their Kickstart service and have an 'expert designer' (quote from their website) re-design my website to give it a more professional look as I'm hoping to expand the charity work in the near future.

I phoned them, I asked for 3 pages at £99 per page. They convinced me to go for 4 pages and they would throw a logo design in for free. So I paid just under £400 up front.

So to cut a long story short - the service I've received has been f***ing awful (excuse my language).

They said they would have my website up and running after 3 weeks. They sent me the first design 3 weeks and 1 day after I sent all content etc and they had not done as we agreed. He took my original design from the website that I made a year ago and changed it around a bit and it looked worse than before. There was nothing original on there.

I replied saying scrap the whole thing - I wanted him to start from scratch and design something professional looking removing all elements from the previous website. I even drew the layout and sent to him. I wrote a long email specifying everything I wanted on there and how I wanted it to look.

Just over a week later, he's sent me a new design. It looks marginally better but its nothing I couldn't have done myself and its still not what I asked for.

I also sent him a sketch of what I wanted the logo to look like as logo design is included in the package. He has taken my scanned drawing and inserted it into the website. He has not done a single with it.

On closer inspection of the terms and conditions today, I noticed it said that the free logo applied when you purchased a 3 or more page website so they basically conned me by telling me that if I purchase 4 pages they will give a free logo rather than the initial 3 that I asked for.

It looks as though he has spent 5 minutes working on the website and been completely careless - not paying any attention to detail.

I my opinion it is not up to standards and not worth £400.

I would be grateful if someone could please advise me on the best course of action to take and maybe tell me where I stand legally on requesting a refund.

Thank you

It's subjective, what ever he does you could say you could do better so it's a no win situation.

The problem you have is he is working on it and whether you think it's worth £400 or not is irrelevant, you are paying for the man hours invested in it.

The fact it's only £400 doesn't fill me with confidence that you are going to get the website you think you are getting, yes £400 is peanuts for a professional site. You seem capable of doing that kind of work yourself so I would say you made a mistake but one you will have to live with.

As it's a B2B contract you are bound by their terms, you need to now check those terms to see if you have cause for a refund.

Does B2B mean business to business?? Does it make a difference that my organisation is not a business as such and the website was paid for out of my personal money?
