£2500 for an eleven year old, petrol Mondeo?

Someone's pulling your leg. I paid that for a five year old one a couple of years back, with similar mileage. It's probably worth half that now -- so I'd respectfully suggest that your car is worth around a third of what you think.

And with that being the case, no I would not pile £1000 into it.
  • Have you checked your brake fluid / clutch fluid level? A clutch not disengaging to me sounds different to a slipping clutch. Possibly bleed the system before pouring cash into the car?

I know there are a lot of well meaning people on here, but downright confusion of faults really doesn't help a non-techie.
There could be a hydraulic fault, from a loose connection to a failed hose or seal in the master or slave cylinder. That would prevent the clutch from disengaging. (Try pumping the clutch pedal a few times to see if it goes into gear). That is failure to disengage, not clutch slipping.
Clutch slip can occur when the friction material is worn out (which can blue the flywheel, burn it or even need a light skim because of inclusions on the flywheel face) or the pressure plate springs have weakened or failed. The clutch disc (the friction plate) simply doesn't have the frictional bond anymore with the flywheel to provide drive through the gearbox.
Another cause of failure is when the thrust bearing actually sticks or goes through the pressure plate, your not going to get any drive at all usually from that.

The OP said it cost him £2500, not that it was worth £2500.

I'd agree with what has been said above. A proper diagnosis from a proper mechanic, work out the costs, and take it from there.

Just updating the thread so anyone with a similar issue can see how it resolved.

I phoned round and got some quotes and they were all very close to the garage I'd been recommended (None were dealers, all were independents). So I went with the initial garage.

The DMF did need replacing as well. Final cost was £1049.

The garage confirmed that the dealer who repaired the faulty clutch when I bought the car had only done the clutch and not the DMF.

Thanks again for all of your posts and advice.

Put your foot on the clutch select first gear keeping clutch depressed start engine if car lurches forward you've either got a seal gone in the slave cylinder , or master cylinder if it doesn't lurch forward release the clutch if the car remains stationary still in gear the clutch has fell to pieces a DMF will rattle on forever
