Bandwidth Question

I received the email below regarding our company website. Does this mean we are uploading too much stuff to it or too many people are looking at it?!

Since February the bandwidth usage of your website has been consistently above the allocated 5 GB that in included in your current hosting account.

Jan 5.47 GB
Feb 6.51 GB
Mar 6.79 GB
Apr 6.09 GB
May 8.75 GB
Jun 8.51 GB

Our standard bandwidth overage rates are £5 per GB but we can offer a better rate if you pre-buy. I would recommend we up your account to 10 Gb per month allowance at an extra cost of £17.50 per month for 6 months.
Alternatively we could just bill for overage on a month by month basis at £5 per Gigabyte per month.

Thanks very much!

  • I think it can change between hosts, but generally speaking:

Bandwidth is the amount of data (in bytes) that is uploaded to your site every time you change it, and the amount of data downloaded from your site every time somebody visits it. This is automatically reset every month.

    Hi,

Yes, as said above youre either uploading tremendous amounts to your site each month or, more likely, you're getting ever increasing numbers of visitors who are downloading files. It may also be worth checking your site logs to see if you're being hammered by bots, robots or other malicious entities who can then be blocked.

And yes, those rates for excess bandwidth are a rip off. I praise your company for not automatically suspending you or automatically charging as many would have, but those rates are phenominally high.

Consider shopping around for a new host, people here and on other boards recommended HostGator to me. I get 100GB bandwidth every month for about £5 as well as 100GB space and all the other features you would expect, and am thrilled with the service. I have had minor problems of my own making and they have been fixed quickly and sympathetically so that improves my view of the host.
