Npower's year late bills

Hello
I wondered if you could advise me please. I moved into a property in October 2012 I changed my gas supplier from Npower to British Gas when I moved in, I heard nothing more from Npower until 04/10/13 when I received a bill for £137.29. This was the first I had heard of owing Npower anything, I called them and asked for an explanation they said it was for use of gas between 27/10/12 - 10/12/12 I had not been billed for this, they said they had sent bills and sent me 2 copies of bills dated 27/10/12 & 24/12/12. I initially began to pay as thought it must be right however I feel unsure if I actually used that gas and as it is nearly a year later find it impossible to track and assess, is it acceptable to start to recover money this late down the line. Please could you advise me if there is anything I can do.
Thanks
Sherjl

did you register with them when you moved in?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Did you not read the meter when you moved in and when you changed to BG. If so you should know if you used the gas or not. When did BG actually take over your supply, hopefully you've got a meter readings, either on your bills or scribbled down somewhere.
If you don't read your meters and keep a record of the readings then you'll find it hard to argue with nPower
