Green Card Tesco £45

Hi,

A week ago i renewed my car insurance with tesco, and told the guy on the phone that i would be travelling to albania for a month at the end of july.
He told me that i would minimal cover up to and including croatia.

He told me that if i needed a green card, all i had to do was give him the dates, and a green card would be issued for free.

I phoned tesco today asking for a green card, and they told me it would cost £45.
Friends of mine on different insurances got their green cards for free.

Has anybody delt with tesco on green cards?

Most websites, like [SIZE=-1]www.fco.gov.uk and www.abi.org.uk say that green cards are given free of charge by insurers.

From your recap I suspect there was a misunderstanding / poor explanation of the situation during the first telephone conversation. Here is what I think has happened:

As advised, you would recieve the minimum cover required in law up to and including Croatia free of charge as countries to this point will be EU / signatory countries.

When the adviser informed you that the 'Green Card could be issued for free', I reckon they were trying to say that they could arrange fully comp cover (rather than merely the legal minimum) for countries up to and including Croatia free of charge.

The £45 charge is probably solely in relation to arranging Green Card cover in Albania as this is not part of the EU.

Whether it stands or not is really at the discretion of the insurer, each insurer will of course have a different policy on charges for foreign cover. They may offer some leeway on this in light of the confusion.

Edited to add: Section G of the Tesco policy document:

    http://www.tescofinance.com/personal/finance/insurance/carins/standard/policy-doc.html#foreign_Use

does state "Subject to Our consent and to the payment of any additional premium requested, We will issue an International Motor Insurance Certificate/Green Card in respect of Your Car."
