Car insurance - commuting to volunteer?

I am aware of the ABI volunteer driving motor insurance commitment, whereby insurance companies have confirmed they will not charge extra to volunteer drivers, but what is the position with the commute to a volunteer role?

I volunteer at an animal rescue at the weekends and drive there and back from home. Public transport is not very good at all, particularly at weekends. I had an accident on my way home last weekend and now the insurance company are kicking off because my policy was social, domestic and pleasure only. They are classing volunteering as a workplace and I was therefore commuting.

The company in question are on the ABI commitment as one which does not charge extra for volunteer driving and does not need to know about it!

I'm confused - can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

Your volunteer work is unpaid therefore not employment in the accepted sense. Therefore, there is no element of commuting for your volunteer work.

Travelling to a place of work = commuting. Never seen the wording travelling to a place of work where you get paid.

I think you should have added commuting.
