I think it is stealing, from the UK public; where else do you think the money came from?
Although I do have some sympathy as you sound young and skint. Maybe in a few years you'll be earning a bit more, and paying it back won't seem so hard?
P.S. You did better than me if you managed to borrow £49k0 -

From me - the higher rate UK taxpayer (for the last 8 years anyway until I emigrated).Although I do have some sympathy as you sound young and skint. Maybe in a few years you'll be earning a bit more, and paying it back won't seem so hard?
I can pay it back easily, I just don't want to give away 500 GBP if I don't have to. I've already more than paid for it with the disgustingly high rates of tax the British government levies on taxpayers.P.S. You did better than me if you managed to borrow £49k
I borrowed around 10k from the SLC and another 12k to fund my Masters from a bank. How on earth did you manage 49k?!0 -
I phoned them today to make an offer of half the amount. The chap I spoke to said they weren't authorised to offer settlements like that, but gave me an address to write where they could consider such an offer.
I'd just write then but make it 100% clear that you don't have the money to pay the full amount but are willing to pay half but you need acceptance in writing within a week to allow you to make payment.
If I'm being honest, I see where you're coming from about just going and forgetting about it but putting any moral questions aside it's a small price to pay for wrapping up a loose end.

be careful with that mindless chip on your shoulder, as the land of the free have a different approach to tax evasion/fraud0 -

Relevance?
Seems to me you don't know !!!!!! you are talking about. I would love for you to detail how not paying off a government loan in some way could be construed as 'tax evasion' or 'fraud'. Indeed, I can offset the interest on this loan on my tax return!
My advice to you: don't comment until you have some clue about the subject you're talking about.0 -
I think this poster has made his mind up, good luck to you, well done, feel proud. No one will ever trouble you for the £500, and more importantly for all us honest citizens, we have one less dishonest and untrustworthy person in this country!!0

You mean, good luck and well done to me for paying back 99% of my loan in stark contrast to the overwhelming majority of students who don't even manage to pay back 50% before it's either written off or they default?0 -

You don't sound like a higher rate tax payer - to be so desperate to justify keeping £500 you owe. I'm skint, but I'm paying back my Student Loan...:p
I'm a tax payer too, but I signed an agreement to pay back my loan, so I'm keeping my word.
And you said you had paid back 99%, so if 1% = £500, you must have borrowed a total of £50k, repaid £49500.
Though, if you've borrowed £10k, you haven't 'repaid 99%' and were exaggerating to make it look better... :rotfl:0 -

Why would I want to give away 500 GBP if I don't have to?I'm skint, but I'm paying back my Student Loan...:p
If you're 'skint', it probably means you're hardly paying back anything at all. Probably only just the interest?I'm a tax payer too, but I signed an agreement to pay back my loan, so I'm keeping my word.
And I have paid it back, when taking into consideration the fact that the interest being charged is 1% above the base rate. (ie, the SLC is making a, small, profit from this loan). And you said you had paid back 99%, so if 1% = £500, you must have borrowed a total of £50k, repaid £49500.
Ok, 96%. Happy?0 -
Did the OP really come for advice? The advice seems to have been universal ("pay it off and stop complaining") but OP doesn't seem to like what they hear?0
