PVC window sills

Options
We're getting new PVC windows installed and are unsure if we should get PVC sills.

I think the PVC sills look nice and clean but have been told by friends & family that they get marked & damaged easily whereas wood can be sanded and re painted etc.

Our sills are currently dark mahogany and if we were to keep them we would want them a lighter colour, like an oak.

Does anyone have any experience on wood vs pvc sills or advice on how we could strip back the old sills to make them look new and modern?

TIA

PVC sills are a nightmare - they do scratch and mark easily and IMHO they don't look too smart. As you are having new windows order new hardwood sills as part of the job.

I've just spent the day cleaning the PVC sills that were fitted when the double glazing in our house was done (about 11 years ago I think).

The one in the bathroom is damaged where someone appears to have stubbed out a cigarette. They're all scratched, and there's the odd drip of paint which now can't be removed without further scratching. Some of the end-caps have disappeared. It's impossible to get them looking good.

If they were wooden they would have been sanded and re-painted long since. I wouldn't touch them with a barge-pole, and the minute I can afford it I will be replacing all the double-glazing and the window sills that came with it.

Blimey i must be lucky as my PVC sills still look brand new after over 10 years. I wipe them over every month but once a year use whitening toothpaste to get stains off then Mer car polish to make them shine.
