HSBC PPI Query

I recently received 2 letters from HSBC to advise that I had taken out PPI on a £5000 graduate loan I took out in 2005. I was a little surprised as I was convinced I didn't take out the cover. So, after some rooting around in my parent's attic I managed to find the paperwork for the loan. This included a checklist showing that the HSBC rep had advised me to take out the protection but I had chosen not to.

I called HSBC to query this and they told me that my account showed that I did actually have PPI on my loan. Apparently my account number has letters before it which means PPI was on the account. They advised I filled in the paperwork regardless so they could investigate the case for me, which I did and also included a copy of the original loan paperwork.

I suspect they have got it wrong their end. Just curious to know if this has happened to anyone else and what the outcome was.

Thanks,

Christina

This should be nice and easy for them to investigate as you have the records. All they need to do is compare yours to what actually happened and if different they will correct it.

However, there have been false positive PPI letters go out. Commonly where the person cancelled it within the cancellation rights period (so the loan code shows PPI was set up at point of sale, which then generates the letter, but no premium was paid because it was cancelled) or where the staff member used the wrong code for the loan (with PPI instead of no PPI) but no PPI was actually paid.

You will have to wait and see but yes it could be a false positive or it could be that they did add it.
