question about cancellations

Just a quick one;
If I miss a dirct debit and thus my car insurance cancells as a result are my insurance company obliged to let me know?

    You would expect to be given a warning about it to allow you to pay the missing payment and then if you fail to do that then a notification that it has been cancelled.

    However, they will typically use the communication method of your choice when you set the policy up and for many doing it online, that is email or text message. If you dont check your emails or it goes to spam, or your change your mobile tel number, you could miss that. They do not need to give postal notifications.
