depends on how small you want them to stay. if you want to keep them small, you have to prune them. we had some that started off at about 1ft tall, didnt prune them, and they are now about 3ft tall after about 5yrs. so not massive, but still taller then i expected them to grow.

I have two in pots and two in a bed, they've all put on about 1" of new growth each year.
Google their name and you'll be able to check how much and how quickly they'll grow, although that info should be on the label......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

If you google the name and find out that they do grow bigger but are slow growing, why not leave them where they are for a year or so and just dig 'em out when they start getting too big? I've done that before when I wanted 'instant effect' but knew that I would want to change the bed around in a couple of years anyway.
I also had 3 in some winter hanging baskets, and only took them out after 3 years when the baskets started to rot. I transferred them to pots and they quickly died - they were much happier in a much smaller hanging basket for some reason.
So long as they are only growing an inch or so a year, I'd be tempted to leave them in until they look too big.0 -
If you are still worried, you could dig them up, put them in a normal plastic pot and then put them back in the garden in the pot, that way the roots will be kept bound by the pot, but it will still look like they are planted in the bed.Always on the hunt for a bargain0

dwarf conifers take about 15 years to grow around 6feet in height. regular conifers will grow that in a couple of years and be 15 years will proberbly be close to 20feet. we have a normal conifer at home, its been there for 8 years and we prune it so that it doesnt go over 5 feet it could easily manage 15 feet by this time but just prune yours and it will be fine0
