We have had free travel insurance through our bank account for years, just as well because on a trip to Tenerife in March we were both unfortunate enough to suffer from Bronchitis and had a quite large bill racked up in the local clinic. Thank God we had the insurance.

Now the insurance benefit has been withdrawn we would not dream of not taking out insurance for any trip.

Wouldn't dream if travelling without insurance .

A few years ago we took my aunt, aged 84, to Ypres. She and her late husband had visited many times just with their EHIC cover, but we insisted on her bring insured.

She fell and broke her hip. She was treated in Belgium, but an ambulance back to Kent was €145, in addition to the 25% of the treatment for which she was liable.
