great yarmouth on a budget

hi, we have a 4 nights/5 days in yarmouth (just outside) end of july.

looking for ways of having a really cheap yet nice holiday.

2 children aged 5 and 7

we have tesco vouchers already exchanged which will cover 2 or 3 days out including pleasurewood hills, africa alive and one other hopefully.

eating out is off the cards really unless there are any good deals we will eat in the chalet/take picnics

children always want 'things' ice creams/ drinks in the clubhouse etc

would love to do this with as little spending money as possible to enable us to spend money on other days out in the six weeks holidays

what sort of budget do you think we could realistically do this for, and does anyone have any tips/hints/ deals for great yarmouth and the surrounding area

thank you for reading

    I assume you have transport.

I used to take my children to Oulten Broads A12 out of Yarmouth heading for Lowestoft and pick up the A146 to Oulten Broads.

You can spend a good 4/5/6 hrs depending on weather, they have a lot of boats there, yacht racing, fishing, large green to play ball etc, Caf! for coffee etc. Play park, climbing frames swings etc.

Normally the toilets are clean there too.

Norwich has a market every day, Museum,

There is a place called `By-gone Village` out Acle way which used to be cheap to enter with various attractions Car museum, Train rides, carousel.
Best you check that one out through the internet before you go.

Wroxham Barns has childrens fair ground , farm animals and Craft shops (The latter are expensive but nice to see)

The information bureau will have leaflets on this, probably on the site your staying at.

    Hope this helps

    Roy

    Enjoy your break

You don't say where you are staying, but the beach is fantastic (take a picnic) and if you want to go on the pier just save up lots of 2ps and enjoy the penny slot things in the arcade.
Your children are still young enough to enjoy a walk and splash in the water and pebble collecting etc.
If you going to one of the holiday camps (as we did for many years) enjoy the daytime activities and then use your usual routine at night.
When our got a bit older we would let them stay up till 9pm if they had a good nap in the afternoon.
That was in the days when children were not allowed to scream and fret because they wanted to be in bed but parents wanted to drink it was adults only after 9pm - so they went to bed and we took it in turns to enjoy any cabarets.

Burgh Castle is free and it's in a grassy field so a great picnic spot.
It's just outside Yare Village Caravan Park, ask at the park for directions.

  • Each Tuesday from 22nd July Hemsby (nr Scratby) is having a free firework display each week through the summer but fairly late 10pm on the beach - FREE
Great Yarmouth fireworks each Wednesday from 23rd July, music from 8pm fireworks 10pm from beach behind Sealife/Marina Centre - Free
If you have a car take the kids crabbing at Walberswick (Just need string, bucket and some meat- Kids love it) then into Southwold for some lunch/beach then to Dunwich (forest woods) for exploring etc. All three above neighbour each other and are approx. 20 -30 mins from Scratby south on A12. Would be a full day if doing all three.
Your children are just the right age for somewhere like Pettits based at Reedham nr Acle. They have a bit of everything based for the under 7's. The usually have a deal go once, keep the receipt and return for half-price. Ideal if your local or here for a couple of weeks.
If you look around you will probably find several Pick-Your-Own in the area, My daughter loves picking Strawberries/Raspberries etc, Cheap, healthy and saves you going shopping. (1+ Hours).
If it's wet I would head towards Norwich - Castle, Cathedrals, River and plenty of shops.

contact gt yarmouth tourist information discount tickets to loads of places . would recommend picnic boats on broads we found they do an early morning discount so would take a picnic breakfast. Potters heigham . there is also a ferryboat/steam train which was good value . Also look out for local newspaper often events you can attend . One year RSPB had events and our son made a birdhouse in the woods and also got interviewed by local radio. We have holidayed in many Countries Gt Yarmouth villages Hemsby/Hopton and Bacton in Winter are my favourites. Fire works were brilliant last year on the seafront. and Free!

The local takeaways will all deliver to the chalet park (to your own chalet) so that may be an option of yu want a break from cooking but can't afford to eat out. I always find the portions huge so share 1 adult Chinese meal between me and husband.

Pick up the local tourist info brochures as they may have discount vouchers for other days out.
