I have been browsing the web this weekend and see that A%%le have dropped the price of the Ipod Touch and also launched a 16GB model.

So as at today's date, (6/7/14) and using Arg0S as reference, the 16GB model is £159, 32GB is £199 and the 64GB is £250.

I loved my old Ipod Touch but its one of the older models so now most apps don't work/won't update as the operating system is capped at 4. something and its not great on space at just 8GB.

I'd like to upgrade BUT rumours abound that there might be a new release of the Ipod Touch in October and I'm reluctant to sign back up with Apple when my phone (the sony experia e) is an android device - I see little point in running/paying for android and apple apps. Also as and when the Ipod Touch gets updated, I've got it in the back of my mind that the operating system will be capped again for the 5G and I'll find myself in the same position as I do now - i..e not able to run apps/update/install them in the first place. Done no doubt so as to force you to upgrade.

So I thought about killing two birds with one stone and upgrading my phone instead.

I like the look of the Galaxy S3. Its got a bigger screen than the Ipod Touch and a better camera at 8MP. Today's price on Arg0S is £230. Factor in the cost of a memory card and a case/cover and the price creeps up of course but now we have the same memory as the 64GB Ipod Touch, I would also be sticking with android apps and I wouldn't need to carry round a phone, camera and a music player as the Samsung Galaxy S3 would do all of these.

If I'm being honest, I don't really need a new phone and the cost is off putting. Likewise I like the idea of finally getting my grubby mitts/upgrading my Ipod touch but then I feel I'm being cheated with a smaller screen and less megapixels on the camera.

I suppose with the advent of smartphones, the demand for mp3 players is no more which is why the choice of these is so limited now. Really that's all I want, a decent device to play/store music on to include my audible books.

I'm not sure I can bring myself to spend over £200 on a phone. I've never been keen on signing up for a contract and am reluctant to do so just to get the phone I want.

I'd welcome views on what options people would go for or if you have an alternative to suggest.

It doesn't matter which version you get , there will always be a newer model on the way.
I have the 4th gen ipod touch, it doesn't get much use, the music player is probably more useful than the stock music players in other brands.
Likwise with the phones, I have the xperia Z and it has been superceded twice in just over a year, I find the available volume of the ipod touch much higher than the phone via headphones.

Thanks for your reply. I have the audible app on my xperia e and don't find it as user friendly as on my old apple touch and the limits on the volume are annoying especially when walking by traffic. I've downloaded the am7z0n auto rip app today but haven't been able to work out how to download the music to my sd card rather than the phone memory which is very limited (so the download fails). why can't there be a decent music playing device that isn't ap0le with the ap0le price tag!

I looked at the Samsung Galaxy S3 but then the Samsung Galaxy S4 caught my eye .... 13 MP camera amongst other better features. But at £350.00, I could get probably get a laptop for that and I'd almost be too scared to use it. when you think some phones can be bought for £10, its crazy that some phones cost £500 +.

I did pay not much under £500 for my handset, but it certainly has had more than twice the use of the ipod touch which cost me £249, for me I do take lots of pics around 40-100 a month. I was hoping once I change cars the ipod touch would get some more life, however the change of car brings SD card player and a USB port (which doesn't control the ipod touch) , so the only way the ipod touch can get use in the car is via the bluetooth and even then you cannot change albums from the car contoller, so for me a high spec phone will always win hands down.
