I am no expert in when it comes to ripping my DVDs to my hard drive, so I need some advice from those who know. I am basically looking to reduce my DVDs rips but keep the optimum picture quality and sound. I am using A Windows 7 operating system and I like to watch across different platforms such as my television and ipad for instance.i just want one format that's fits everything if that at all possible. I have tried Handbrake but it's a bit slow but if it's the best so be it. Is there any good tutorials on the subject? Would like to reduce file size to around 800mb when at all possible without compromising with quality.

Its impossible to reduce 4.7gb to 800mb without loss of quality. What you can do is just rip the main .vob file and just the audio you want and the perhaps put it in an mkv container. This will probably reduce size by 1/3 depending on dvd

What program do you suggest that I use for this? Is mkv more universal than mp4?

    Don't waste your time.

For about £60 you can buy a 2TB drive that will comfortably hold 200 DVDs as straight rips without compression.
  • 800mb with no loss? Nah, won't happen. You'll need to mess about with the different encoding settings in handbreak, try H.264 and aim for a file between 1 and 2gb

I normally rip straight to ISO for 'archive' and then create mp4s from the ISO for use on the ipad
