  • I feel I know you all so well, so I'm sharing the sad news that my darling husband died on 23rd December. It would have been his birthday on Christmas Day.

As heart broken as I am, I'm glad that he's finally at peace. He has had Alzheimer's for 12 years, and I "lost" him many years ago. I'm in limbo, because everywhere is shut and I can't get things sorted till tomorrow, but it wouldn't be Sunday if I didn't come on here, codes or no codes.

I wish everyone a Happy New Year, and if you know someone who is a carer, try and find half an hour a month to give them a call, or perhaps meet for a coffee, because it is such a lonely life.

So sorry to hear your sad news.

It sounds like your husband has been ill for many years. My mother suffered with Alzheimer's, and I know how difficult a condition it is.

Like you say, he is at peace now. Thinking about you at this sad time.

So very sad to hear your news. I hope you have friends and family around you to comfort you at this very difficult time - especially Christmas. I lost my father in law just before Christmas so know at first hand how hard it can be. Take comfort in knowing that your husband is no longer suffering and draw on all your wonderful memories of your life together. Much love xxx

My heartfelt best wishes, hugs and kisses for you Sandra.

12 years is a very very long time, and the state of limbo (I'm sure you know what I mean) you have been in for most of that time, and the new state of limbo you will be feeling right now and for quite a time forward I know just drains you of your very being.

My Mum had Alzheimer's for 7 years (from diagnosis to her dying - although looking back the very 1st symptoms were appearing 18 to 24 months earlier) but I only "lost" her for about the last 12 months when the last sparkle was gone and unfortunately she just had to go into a nursing home.

Timing was "similar" too, she was buried on what would have been her 87th birthday.
Now I'm the major carer for my dad, diagnosed with Alzheimer's almost 2 years ago. Although he is doing very well having got on the Donepezil (Aricept) so very early (I saw the signs because of Mum) and he turned 100 years old in August.

Hopefully you can deal with it much like I did.

Yes there's sadness, loss, grief and a huge "time" void now in your future life (just all the time of daily devotion spent that has now come to an end) that you may wonder how to occupy yourself with something that is fulfilling and makes you happy.

    But I'm sure you will.

In the memories of better times past, now that there's peace for both your lives and relief in yours (and don't you dare feel guilty about either of those feelings) and like you said and my experience with mum, they both "died" in our eyes a long time before their bodies succumbed to the rigors of this terrible disease.

I suppose I mourned my loss of mum many long months before her death, something I then almost celebrated, and this was totally understood by those around me.

For her funeral I wrote my own valediction which I had someone read out.
Sadly (or then again not sad but justifiably honest, true and expected) I was too emotional to do it myself.
But I regularly recall it, especially on her birthday, and it gives me comfort and solace when I miss her most or if I'm at a low ebb.

Maybe you should do the same

My sympathy and commiserations once again
