Estimated final bill from EDF

Here I am again with yet another query only this time on a different topic.....switched energy suppliers (electric only) from EDF to Scottish Hydro. My supply date started with Scottish Hydro on 10th May this yr prior to which they were given a meter reading by me so they could set up new account with this & EDF could close my existing one, no estimates needed or so I thought! Fast forward almost two months to today & I come home from work to find an ESTIMATED final bill waiting for me from EDF. I have letters from EDF confirming "your new supplier has been in touch to confirm the reading they'll use to open your account, it's the same reading we'll use to generate your final bill & close your EDF energy account." What I don't understand is why it's estimated when they were given & have apparently agreed the final meter reading given to them by Scottish Hydro?

Have you checked the estimated reading against the reading you took?
I think it is only estimated due to there possibly being a few days between you taking the reading and the supply changing.0 -
The reading they use should be the same as the reading that Scottish Hydro are using. So check what SH are using as their take over reading and if it's different to EDF then you need to find out why.
As said there might be a few days discrepancy between the reading that you gave SH and the actual takeover date but it shouldn't be muchNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
I stupidly never kept a note of the reading I gave Scottish Hydro but presumably I could get it if I phoned them up & explained the situation? Thing is on the front page of bill from EDF it says in bold writing YOUR FINAL ELECRICITY BILL, gives a balance of £118.29 in credit then in a wee box below that it says this is based on an estimate! So is it final or is it an estimate? I'm confused!!0

If you don't know what the reading was then you'll never know. Check with SH to see what they are using and let this be a lesson to keep hold of information until it's all done & dusted.
Make a resolution that you'll now read the meter regularly (at least once a month), record it somewhere (on a spreadsheet) and give the info to SH.
Then check that their bills correspond with your readings and if they don't get them corrected immediately. That way you won't end up either over or under payingNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Ill phone hydro next wk if they aren't open tomorrow & see what I can find out. As for future bills I'm planning on a pre payment meter as I think it's unlikely I'll remember to read the meter regularly & I certainly don't want a repeat of the nightmare that was estimated bills from EDF. Thanks for the advice.0
