Who do you buy your seeds from?

Hi,

I am moving back to the UK in a few months time, the other half has bought a house and I am already getting excited about growing my own fruit and veg again.

I used to just buy the odd seeds from the garden centre as I never really had a plan, was living in rented accomodation (therefore growing in containers), and just bumbled along having fun.

Now we are going to have a big garden so I can actually plan, plant and harvest, realistically supplying a fair share of the food we need. Ive been reading all the books and am so ready for this challenge.

The thing is - who do you recommend to buy seeds from - vegetableseeds . net has a sale on, and a small but desent range of seeds. And if I buy them now, will they last until next year?

Any other reccommended company?

Get all the catalogues ,Suttons/ T&M/Jersey etc subscribe to their web sites and check out their offers. Don't restrict yourself to one.

ps don't try and attempt to much , too soon .

Premier Seeds Direct have an eBay shop and do packets from 49p. I have no complaints about the quality.

Real Seeds sell non-hybrid veg because they encourage home seed saving. They can be quite pricey, but their quality is good and their web site/ ethos is interesting.

Lidl sell seeds in late spring, starting at 25p a packet. No problems with those either.

Most seed keeps in a cool, dark, dry place for a few years, but some, like parsnips, doesn't.

I use vegseeds. net, but also have blog there, so get free seeds for posting on blog

As Wallbash states, get the lot, and any time soon a lot of shops will start reducing their prices to clear the stock, but the seed will keep for a few years

I've just stocked up from Park also, I store veg seed packets in salad drawer in fridge and haven't had much loss in germination rates over last couple of years from use by 2012 packets .

I can second Premier Seeds if you're looking for a particular plant type, also their Customer Service was excellent after my order went awry.

I selectively use Real Seeds as recommended above. They are a little pricey to start with but after following their instructions on saving seed I haven't had to buy in pea or bean seeds for the last two years and hope never to have to do so again. Would particularly recommend their tall pea variety 'Champion of England', a rediscoved old Victorian variety which grows 8" high and produces large pods with up to 12 very sweet peas. Their on line catalogue is very interesting and informative.

Nicky's Nursery for me, still using chilli seeds I bought 3 years ago I also go to Wilko when they reduced their seeds (usually about this time of the year) I'm not too fussy if I'm just after some bog standard herbs and stuff, if a shop I'm in sells seeds I'll have a look

Thanks for all the tips everyone. Ive got lots of websites and catalogues to be looking at. I think i will order from a couple companies amd send my mum off to search for the in store sales before I get home. Will let you know how i get on next year. I will try not to go overboard.....

It sounds silly, but I have bought seeds from eBay before, carrot seeds in particular, they were only 80p delivered, bargain really

I use the various catalogues, ebay, free offers, the mrs swipes them off the front of gardening magazines which are being returned in her work, friend swap.

For onion sets ,seed potatoes, fertiliser, I use my local horticultural society where you can buy it all loose by weight. Membership for me is £4 per annum. Well worth joining if you have a local one of them if only for the knowledge that can be provided.

Gardeners world seems good value on plants in my opinion. I bought 3 varieties of chilli and 3 varieties of tomato for £3 inc post this year and they're doing well.
