Hazelnuts - when to pick

How will I know when the hazelnuts are ready to pick from my tree? They are green at the moment but would like to know if there is something I should look for to beat the local squirrel to the crop.

Well, you can cross your fingers ;)
Unfortunately, grey squirrels tend to "steal" hazlenuts before they are properly ripe. However, how about feeding them something else instead. If you put out sunflower seeds/fat balls etc in an accessible position, hopefully they will fill up on that instead and leave your hazlenuts alone.
    Good luck

Hi vfairbrass I have got some hazelnuts growing by us. The best time to pick them is in September or October when the nuts have turned a light brown colour. Thats if the kids or Squirrels haven't grabbed them first. Just keep your eye out for any squirrels. Good luck.
