Insurance company claiming they never received written off car

Hi All,
Really hope someone can help.
My mrs had a non fault accident in december last year.
The car was written off and she received she accepted the offer.
She was told that if she wanted to keep the car 35% would be deducted from the payout.
She said she didn't want to keep it so it was picked up and she received the cheque.
Now 8 months later she has gone to cancel the insurance as she hasn't bought another car and her insurance has said they never got the car and that she owes them £500.
Unfortunately she can't find the receipt from the company that picked up the car and her insurance are saying there's nothing on the "system".
It has been a shambles from the beginning with courtesy car etc is there anything she can do?
Thanks in advance
Pete

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
Contacting the DVLA was going to be my next step didn't realise you can get info on a car you have previously registered... for a fiver I might add haha.
We didn't know who picked up the car but luckily my mrs contacted the company who she briefly had a courtesy car from and they said it was probably copart who had picked up the car after it was written off.
So we contacted them and they confirmed they had picked it up, but couldn't give any details but would contact her insurance company to confirm.
They did and it is now all sorted.
Her car insurance WAS aviva who handled the whole claim disgracefully!
