Sometimes adding a named driver can put the price down, I think it can be a parent if not your spouse.0

It can be anyone.
My OH used to put his best friend. He drove he car once, but saved nearly £200 pa for having him named 'just in case'0 -
absolutely - for our children when they passed at seventeen both OH and myself went onto their policies and it more than halved them.
Youngest now has both of us AND her b/f on the policy.
Add people, reduce costs - but obviously people with history and no points or crashes.0 -
Make sure you keep up to date with these people's records though. More than one person has come a cropper when random checks shows your mate had a crash in their own car 15 months ago and you didnt inform your insurers of this.0

I'm in a similar situation, test passed 2 weeks ago at the age of 37.
I've never once seen a quote for over £3,000 though, even ensuring a 911 was only 2500 or so!
Ordered a new car yesterday (Kia Rio) and best quote was £650 with 1st Choice though I don't like what I read about them. Admiral and Elephant (I assume are more... trustworthy) are around 750 so that's what I expect to pay.0 -
Hi! newish driver also london here - some tips I found.
Firstly agree with the named driver, even if they don't end up driving nice to have the option and can seriously reduce the cost.
Secondly, I found that having a slightly higher average milage actually made the premium cheaper... for example 5,000 was £2,000 and was £1500! seems that they like you to do more miles...
Paid off all Catalogues 10.10.20140 -
Try different cars too. Sometimes seemingly inconsequential differences can make massive differences to premiums.0

Been doing some quotes for my 17 year old son tonight. 1.0 Corsa, 1.1 Clio come out cheap, at just over 1k.
A 1.5 DCI Clio was £1300 but there's a £120 ish saving on tax.
That's with the OH added, not tried adding me or both yet.
The 1.9GTI Peugeot 205 came in at £6500 and the 1.0 Austin Allegro was about £4000 so they are out the equation.0 -
My 18 yr old son has just got his first insurance through Bell.
He has a box to plug into the car and his driving is monitored for 3 months.
Putting myself and my husband as named drivers bought down the price by a huge amount.
Having the car parked on the road overnight knocked another £40+ off. ( we originally were going to park it in the drive way)
We found an insurer that we quite liked and then spent ages playing with the figures... for example my husband first as a named driver saved a few pounds.... me as retired rather than unemployed (I am getting a pension but looking for work)
Changing the annual mileage and so on.
good luck
