I used a shipping company comparison website to get quotes when I wanted my belongings moved from London to Spain in May 2014.

I chose a company and paid them via Paypal, and paid a fee to the comparison website.

This company did not turn up or call or knock on my door, although they claim they did. They also did not answer my many phone calls.

I tried to claim a refund through Paypal, but Paypal said that they did not have enough evidence to make a decision so they have refused to refund me, even though the comparison website has refunded me in full. I had an independent concierge in the building with CCTV which shows that the company did not turn up, but I cannot give this to Paypal. So I've lost £252.

As I had just hours to go, the comparison website recommended another company. This was on a Friday. The owner said that he would charge £75 for collection the same day. However, he did not collect until Monday. But he is still charging me, now it's £85.

I got to Spain and things did not work out. So I asked the company to store my things until I returned to London. Then he starts ignoring my emails. So I told him that a friend would collect them and store them for free, and he kept saying that he needed to get a storage quote from the warehouse before he would release them.

10 days later, I get to London. He demands around £180 via bank transfer only. And my car breaks down so I am broke and stranded.

He emailed last week to say that there would be no more storage costs, now he has emailed today to say that the warehouse will resume charging me. £14.40 per week. Apparently my stuff is in Essex near Thurrock. 100 cubic ft.

I feel that my belongings are being held to ransom. The comparison website will not respond to me. These charges look very high. And I have no protection if I pay via bank transfer. He took the stuff on 2nd June until now, July.

Can anyone please advise what I should do?
