Breakdown cover???

I have basic cover with Green Flag. My car broke down yesterday and my partner stupidly had it towed home instead of to a garage. Its not driveable so have no way of getting it to a garage now. Local VW garage does not do recoveries. Rang Green Flag and they can't upgrade my cover now that the car isn't in working order.
Anyone know if it would be best just to pay a local company, or would it be better just to take out breakdown cover with AA/RAC with home recovery??

I would pay a local company to move it this time - but has the garage you intend taking it to not got a recovery truck or a car-trailer they can use?
Also consider joining a Motor Club that operates for the benefit of it's members rather than it's shareholders.
That rules out the AA and the RAC of course.
There is much more comprehensive and much cheaper cover available than those 2 can provide.0 -

Hi there, the VW garage doesn't do recoveries. I'm considering taking to elsewhere so will call them first to see if they do recoveries. Thanks0 -
Any idea what caused the breakdown? Did the green flag mechanic make much effort to diagnose/fix?
If not it might be worth getting a mobile mechanic to come and have a look, they could fix it on your drive.0 -
Basic cover could still get it moved to the garage - if the car was recovered home when the garage was shut, then you can ask for a follow on recovery to the garage. Had success with this in the past with Green Flag - only works if the initial recovery was out of hours basically. Otherwise, I'd do the above - if you have an idea whats wrong with it, speak to a local garage. They may be able to do a full fix or temporary fix to get it to the garage.0

Yeah the engine blew up!!! Nothing minor. The recovery guy says there is a hole in the engine - says we will probably need a new one.0 -
I just paid a garage to recover the car from home and take to VW garage - only cost me £48 so was cheaper than taking out new breakdown cover.
Should have got Green Flag to take straight there in the first place........0
