Car Insurance SORN Insurance and No Claims Question

Hi
I am letting my son have my car when he passes his driving test. In the meantime I will have to change my insurance to another car that I am going to drive instead. I know that I have to provide a SORN notice to the Driving Authority, however, the car will be parked in a public space so I assume that I need SORN insurance? Does anyone know if this is the case?
Also I will be the main driver on the new car and my husband will be the named driver. Does anyone know if he will loose his 15 years + no claims as he will no longer be the main driver in an insurance policy?
Thanks

What is the "public place" where it will be parked?
It may not technically be "off the road" as far as SORN is concerned0 -
Depends what you mean by public space. If the car's sitting in a place which is open to the general public strictly speaking you need a policy which covers third party risks, same as if you're actually driving it. (Even if you're not driving it, it can still cause damage if, for example, the handbrake cable snaps and it rolls down a hill). You can only dispense with third party cover if it's kept in a place which is not open to the general public (eg your garage or driveway). Where are you thinking of keeping it?
SORN insurance generally covers fire and theft only, and not anything to do with road accidents or third party liabilities. Whether you get it is entirely up to you, but it's not sufficient if the car is in a place where it has to be insured.
No claims bonus generally follows the policyholder, who may or may not be the main driver. If you both have NCB and you want to keep both in case you go back to having two cars in future, you can do it by alternating between your husband and yourself as policyholder - most insurers will accept a gap in cover of up to two years before your old NCB becomes invalid.0 -
Many thanks for your replies. The car will be parked in the street, we don't have a driveway. It might be better for us to leave the situation as it is until my sons passes his test.Jellynose0

I don't think you can SORN the car if its on the road. You'll also need at least third party insurance.0

According to the information at "WWW.GOV.UK/make-a-sorn", you can only register a vehicle SORN if you don’t use or keep your vehicle on a public road (eg you keep it in a garage, on a drive or on private land). As it will be parked in the street it will need to be fully taxed, MOT'd and have at least third party insurance.0

If you and your husband are going to share a car it's wise to change the main driver over every couple of years, ths will prevent him losing ncb0

You mean the policy holder? The main / additional driver has no bearing on NCD."Always fulfil your needs, only fulfil your wants when your needs are no longer a concern" - citricsquid0 -
