House buying - NI for Housewife

Hi there,

We are buying a property in the joint name of self and my wife. While i have the NI number, my wife being a housewife and claiming no benefits does not have NI number. Is it required for one to have a NI for any legal process in buying a house? My solicitor insists that my wife should have a NI, but she does not have one. Any people in the same situation? Please give your thoughts on this.
Regards
Mangesh

I expect she does have an NI number, but contact these people and they will help you, I'm sure. They're very good.

    Good luck

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.

I will check with them, but pretty sure she does not have a NI as she has not applied and we have migrated from India. Does she needs to have one for the purpose of buying the property?

Gorgeous George has provided the link. Sorry, I assumed you were British. You will need to provide identification to your conveyancing solicitor, they will need to meet you (money laundering regs), and certainly if you are applying for anything in terms of mortgage/investments/assurance or for doctor, etc. she will need to have the NI, and for pension eventually etc. She should just get it.

    Good luck.

  • Your NI number is linked to many other goverment related services including NHS. It does make sense to apply for one anyway as not having it will cause her/you more problems in the future.

If she decides to apply for one, they will make an appointment and do a little interview. It is nothing to be worried of. They will issue a temporary NI number and eventually she/you will get a NI number card send out.

    Good luck!
