I don't notice the difference between value and branded tinned tomatoes. That said, I have been buying the cheapest 3-for-1 or 4-for-1 tins forever, so maybe I just don't remember what more expensive tomatoes taste like. I know that cheap tinned tomatoes are more watery as I hear that quite often, but I always tend to cook them down to the thickness that I need, and I always use the same amounts (1 tin or 2 tins, depending on the dish).

The next cheapest - and most satisfying - option is to buy fresh tomatoes and use them instead. Where I live you can get a bowl of vine tomatoes for £1. They smell and taste great.

I've never eaten chopped tinned tomatoes since I found a huge maggot in one tin, then in the next tin a caterpillar!

Since then, I've bought tins of plum tomatoes and dissected each tomato to satisfy myself that I wasn't get any extra 'meat'!
