I ended up having to sell (basically for peanuts) my rather nice TDCI 6 speed all singing dancing Mondeo after spending £1200 trying to keep it going - it completely died a couple of months after master cylinder replaced, and needed a fortune spending on it. It was only 7 years old. Short of cash, I was offered (from a reliable source) a Rover (yes Rover) that was 8 years old for £500. 1 year MOT, 2 months tax, low mileage - had air con, leccy windows etc. 18 months later, its cost me peanuts to keep going and can do 80 mph on the motorway in comfort, air con still works, and tax is reasonable. Plus if it dies, I've lost £500 minues the motoring I've had out of it - so in profit really. If I'd spent £5k and it died, I'd be miffed.0

Many people have learnt from personal experience that taking out loans for something you cannot afford is not a sensible move. Surely that is knowledge to share?too many people TELLING the guy what to do because they know best.he believes he can afford payments for a reasonably priced car.. under 10 yrs old.. he has consideration for his autistic son.. which i understand as my sister is autistic.. a noisey rattly banger wont be great.
Something that is not new doesn't mean it is a noisy, rattly old banger. There are some excellent cars available for not much money. My Golf is 12 years old but no rattle at all, ice cold air con and cruise control. Cost £750.
The answers are showing that there are plenty of ways to get a car without being in debt when other priorities look to be more important.
I earn substantially more than the OP but choose to drive a car that has no depreciation yet I can still use to do business miles at work. Old cars are no longer things that are about to fall apart after 5 years.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
I bought a diesel Mondeo 54 reg Ghia (one previous owner) for £300 from someone who was going to scrap it because it had done 230,000 miles (mostly motorway) and they were buying a brand new Focus. It has so far walked through both the MOT's I've put it through and has so far only needed two tires.
It's lovely to drive, has cruise control, excellent air con, and is good on miles. There's probably a good reason why you see so many of them as taxis...
If anything major went wrong now, I'd scrap it and get about £150 for it meaning it's cost me £150 to have a decent reliable (so far) car for coming up to 3 years.0 -
I have a V plate (1999) diesel Vectra that I bought for £800 6 years ago. It has 150000+ miles on the clock but is still quiet, comfortable and the air con works. Its passed several MOTs since I've had it and only failed a couple of times on minor things I really should have checked and replaced first.0

Get on the Autism website ans start doing some research.
My nephew is autistic and he qualifies for a motability car as he has trouble assessing traffic and danger sometimes.
My sister has not got the car.
You need to do some research to see what you are entitled to.
The fact you are considering swapping motorbike for car due to the autism shows me that there is a genuine need.
Wether you will qualify for a car is up to the appropriate body.

this is one of those threads where advice in relation to the question hasnt been given...
too many people TELLING the guy what to do because they know best.
That wasnt the question asked..
he believes he can afford payments for a reasonably priced car.. under 10 yrs old.. he has consideration for his autistic son.. which i understand as my sister is autistic.. a noisey rattly banger wont be great.
can anyone offer advice on where this guy could look for a car at a reasonable price with reasonable repayments..
fords of windsor maybe.. you can get a 3k car for under £100 a month.. if he thinks he can afford that not for us to stop him.
You have not realised that many of the people on this forum are in their forties and fifties and this advice is given out after being in similar circumstances and took out a loan that ended up being a millstone round their neck.
The fact the OP has asked for advice would make me think they were not keen on getting HP but are in a sticky position amd don't know which way to go.
Offering advice on where to gets strapped up for expensive credit is not the kind of advice i would ever give the OP.
The problem with a car on HP is you are stuck with it.
Buy a cheapy and you can throw away a dud and get another.
Though is still think there may be some entitlement to DLA.0
