It's on a rolling contract with t-mobile, inclusive minutes and texts etc.
My nieces phone will also be a uk based phone and my sisters is an 'international phone' the foreign office have given her.
Only my mum's is unlocked so easiest way to use their mobiles without breaking the bank while in california?

Just buy a cheap "Pay as You Go" phone when you get to the States, for use in the USA and for contacting home. It'll be far easier to track exactly what you are paying for each call.0

If you use a UK mobile pay as you go make sure you turn off mobile data/roaming. Turned mine on a couple of weeks ago in NY after loading £30 and my credit dropped to £5 after about 2 minutes, phone tried to update endless apps which I didn't need.
Ps each txt cost 89p even if receiving.0 -
Was just about to say that.
Even a PAYG sim with an add-on gives "feel at home" prices.
Unbeatable IMO.====0
