Making a sandpit (out of wooden frames)?

Options
Hi

Any tips/advice?

I have a number of pretty solid rectangular wooden frames (used to be raised beds, but I don't need/want that many raised beds) and want to make them into a sandpit. I plan to use 3 frames: two stacked on top of each other and a third as a lid.

I assume it would be wise to line the pit. What with? Membrane? Plastic sheeting? What is best?

I intend to cover the third frame with something to make a (waterproof) lid. What would you suggest.

Then order some play sand? Maybe a tonne. Any suggested suppliers who will deliver? I am a petite female - so lugging many sacks of sand not hugely appealing.

Any other tips?

Thanks.

You can line the pit with weed control fabric (B&Q etc sell it by the metre - it's dead cheap). That would be better than plastic as it will allow water to drain out if someone decides their sandcastle needs a moat...

For the lid, you could use a tarpaulin, staked down with tent pegs.

Play sand tends to come in smallish bags. It is much softer than builders' sand - worth paying a bit extra IMO.
