fiesta 1.8d, black smoke and lack of power

hi all,
i've got a 98 fiesta with the 1.8 non turbo'd diesel engine, it's got the plastic inlet manifold, so no egr as i understand it.
when i accelerate there's a lack of power and a fair bit of black smoke. if you keep accelerating and get the revs up it clears, pulls pretty hard for what it is and the smoke disappears. with quick gear changes you can keep it pulling, but if you lift off it needs to be cleared again. i pulled the pipe off the air box to rule out the air filter and it's had a recent fuel filter.
i'm leaning towards a dodgy injector, but i'm not that clued up, any ideas?
cheers, steve

If it was an injector fault, you'd have black smoke all the time.
Lack of power and black smoke is generally caused by not enough air for the amount of fuel injected - as the inlet manifold is on top of the exhaust on that engine (IIRC), are you certain you don't have an EGR valve? The symptoms really do point to it, especially your comment about it going well once the revs (and thus airflow) rise.
I'd have thought that a 98 would be EGR'd - my own 98 motor is (although I've blanked it off, of course!).
I'd also check for any restrictions on the inlet side - inlet pipe, inlet manifold - that can also cause the symptoms you describe.

you're right, it's got an egr valve!
is it just stick a metal plate between it and the manifold?

....... and therein lies your problem!
Yup, simple blanking plate, and there will be no more problems from the EGR valve.PLEASE NOTE:
