Relative was rear ended at traffic lights ten days ago.. Car is a mess.. Third party admit fault. so far, so good.

They have been offered £1500 for their car, which I told them to refuse.. So they sent in some adverts from autotrader/eBay of similar cars for £2100-3300 and were duly offered £3500 yesterday afternoon..!!

This morning they recieve a phone call to say the offer of £3500 is being withdrawn and they will be in touch soon.

!!!!!! they playing at?

Everything screams of admin error. Someone mistyped and managed to offer more than what they were being advertised for.

They will come back and offer £1900-£2000.

It's a racquet and we need to get this pushed to the houses of parliament for discussion.

The insurer needs to pay you an amount that will easily get you a replacement car in the same condition. Not the bargain price you can get for your car.

As it stands if you want to replace your car with the money they compensate you. All the stars have to align so you find a replacement sold by private seller who is desperate to sell it off. The compensation is unrealistic.

Unless the £3500 is supposed to include something other than the car itself, it's obviously an error if it's greater than even the highest prices you've seen similar cars advertised for, so I'm not surprised that they want to withdraw it.

I'll let the more knowledgeable opine on whether they can be bound by it, but I imagine not. Is the relative dealing with his own insurer, or the third party's?

Sounds like an admin !!!!-up where they've upped the car value to £2k and assumed a £1500 personal injury was to be added too.
