    Why? - it's something you need and they've got so they can charge what they like and you have no option but to either pay the price or not use it.
    I don't condone it but it's simple economics. If you use less they'll just put the price up to maintain their profits or go somewhere else where they can.
    The government can jump up & down about prices but they don't have much control over what the companies charge although they do have a lot of control over how much tax they take.
    If they were really serious about reducing energy costs for us poor consumers they'd would give the energy companies tax breaks, cancel all the green levies, stop bunging up silly wind turbines all over the place and knock the 5% vat off that we all pay - can't see it happening, can you

    Even if they did all of that, there's still nothing to stop those companies from keeping prices high and getting even more profit.

    Sadly this website has pulled it's excellent section on natural gas/domestic electricity prices recently

    However, the following article bears out the general fact that our gas is rock bottom, and our electricity in the lowest third of the market.

    If you think it's expensive here, try a winter in Germany.
